In a rather bizarre incident in the state of Victoria, Australia, a woman has been subjected to investigation after offering her children for sale in the online auction website eBay.
The woman allegedly placed her kids - a son and a daughter, both under 10, on the auction platform with their photographs accompanied by an extensive sales pitch. Once the matter was reported to eBay, the bidding page was instantly taken down by the site and it offered police full support and collaboration to track down the woman.
The woman, however, claimed that placing her kids for auction was just a joke, and she had no real intentions of selling her kids whatsoever.
"She said the page was created as a joke, but what worries us is the people bidding on the auction," a police official reportedly told the Herald Sun newspaper, The Telegraph reports.
"Who knows who these people are. They could be pedophiles or anyone. It's extremely disturbing," he added.
Police processed the case to the state’s department of human services, and it is currently undertaking a separate investigation on the matter.
Meanwhile an eBay spokesman gave his opinion by saying that the case “demonstrates that anyone posting anything illegal on our site is extremely foolish".
