Trademark Owners Can 'Opt Out' Of .XXX Domains, Prior To General Sale

The Florida based registry operator, ICM Registry, has revealed that it is introducing a limited time-period offer for trademark and intellectual property (ip) owners, so that they can effectively prevent misuse of their name in the new .xxx domain for pornographic websites.

ICM also claimed that it has received about 900,000 expressions of interest up till now for the new suffix. Bearing in mind the massive popularity the .xxx suffix is enjoying so far, the firm announced that it is taking extra measures to make sure that brands get the chance well in advance to buy the .xxx address with their trademark name before these addresses are finally allotted for general sale.

Companies that do not want their brand names to be associated with the porn-industry can buy the domain names for $200 to $300 in order to effectively avoid the infamous “cybersquatters” stealing their brand names.

“We are advising businesses to either opt-in or opt-out and want to give them the best opportunity to do so at the launch of our new [top-level domain],” Stuart Lawley, chief executive of ICM Registry, said, according to a Telegraph report.
