Cisco and HP Form Joint Venture; Create 'Data Centre Extension' Despite Steady Competition

To integrate Cisco’s data centre networking gear with the HP BladeSystem environments, HP and Cisco are planning to offer jointly what they call a data centre “extender."

Now available, the Cisco fabric Extender for HP BladeSystem allows customers to use their HP BladeSystem c-Class infrastructure along with Cisco’s Unified Fabric.

By using the extender, customers can now get more out of joint HP-Cisco environments by configuration of Cisco Nexus data centre switches with the HP BladeSystem rather then choosing one vendor’s data centre products over the other.

Senior Vice President of Cisco’s Global Strategic Partner Organization, Wendy Bahr, confirmed the collaboration with HP is an eyebrow-raiser, especially given the steely competitive rhetoric going back and forth between the two companies.

Bahr mentioned that however, the truth is that many customers have both HP and Cisco in their data centre environments so the joint venture works for customers and the solution providers that serve them to preserve these investments while making money for everyone.

The Fabric Extender is available directly from HP, HP solution providers and Cisco solution providers, said Bahr.
