iPad 2 Rival Alert : RIM Playbook Tablet Free On £30, 12-Month Contract!

We just received news that Mobiles.co.uk, a subsidiary of Carphone Warehouse, is offering a free 16GB RIM Playbook tablet when purchasing a Blackberry Curve 8520 handset deal.

What's even more unbelievable is that the contract, from Talkmobile, is only 12 months long and costs a mere £30, which means that the total cost of ownership is a mere £360.

So to recap, you get a free 16GB RIM Playbook, worth £239 at PC World plus a Blackberry Curve 8520 with 100 minutes, 1000 texts and 1GB data worth .... £30 per month at Carphone Warehouse.

The phone itself comes with a QWERTY keyboard, two megapixel camera, a QVGA 2.64-inch screen, 256MB RAM, a microSD card slot, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Note that Blackberry services package includes free push email and Blackberry messenger on top of the data allowance.

Given that the initial launch price of the RIM Playbook tablet was £399, it looks like RIM is trying to lure back new customers after its user base was eroded by the awful service downtime that affected Blackberry earlier this month.

For several days, tens of millions of Blackberry users were affected by serious disruptions in the Blackberry Internet Services globally.
