The list of top 5 most pirated games of 2011 has been unveiled, with Crysis 2 on the PC, Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Wii and Gears of War 3 on the Xbox 360 topping the charts.
The PC line-up turned out to be quite interesting, as the most downloaded game of the year wasn't the incredibly popular Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3 - though both titles weren't far off the top spot. However, it seems likely that Crysis 2 only topped the chart because it was released in March 2011, giving it more than six months head start.
In total, Crytek's sandbox shooter was downloaded nearly four million times, while CoD: MW3 a little less at 3.65 million - BF3, 3.39 million. Fifa 2012 took the number four spot with just over 3.3 million, with Portal 2 sitting in fifth position with 3.24 million downloads.
These statistics were released by Torrent Freak and are taken from "several sources, including reports from all public BitTorrent trackers." Apparently the results are down a little from previous years - whether that means people are buying any more games is pure speculation.
Console downloads on the Wii and Xbox 360 - despite having their own versions of the most downloaded PC games - were a little different, with Mario showing up in the number one and two spots. Galaxy 2 took the top spot with 1.28 million, with Mario Sports Mix following just behind with a little over a million. Fifa 2012 makes an appearance here, though only coming in at number 5.
The Xbox chart was a little more familiar. While Gears of War 3 took the top spot, it's followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3. However, trailing them on 360 table is Forza Motorsport 4 with around three quarters of a million and Kinect Sports: Season 2 with 690,000.
