BTJunkie Shuts Shop

by Jon Martindale, 06 Feb, 2012 News

After seven years of torrent indexing and search facilities, the file sharing link site BTJunkie has officially closed, seemingly for good.

Despite looking like crap compared to contemporary sites, BTJunkie maintained itself as one of the biggest torrent search sites online for many years. However, despite a seven year pedigree, the owner has made the decision to shut up shop.

Visiting the site now will see the traditional blue background with a simple message. Titled with "BT Junkie, 2005-2012" it reads: "This is the end of the line my friends. The decision does not come easy, but we've decided to voluntarily shut down. We've been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it's time to move on. It's been an experience of a lifetime, we wish you all the best!"

TorrentFreak interviewed the owner of the site, who said that the reason for closing was heavily influenced by the legal action taken against Mega Upload and The Pirate Bay. While BTJunkie had never been the target of lawsuits, to keep it that way the decision was made to shut down the longtime file sharing site.

Similar to the closing of other torrent sites like MiniNova and TorrentSpy, the many millions of monthly users will find a new home elsewhere. The owner of BTJunkie certainly agrees, saying that they see a future for other torrent sites to continue: "I really do hope so, the war is far from over for sure."
