Sony Releases Move.Me SDK in EU and UK

Playing catchup with Microsoft and its Kinect for Windows release, Sony has made available the Move.Me Software Development Kit (SDK) in Europe and the UK after a successful trial in the US.

When it was initially unveiled, Sony's answer to the Microsoft and Nintendo motion tracking hardware was seen as a bit lacklustre, considering the same sort of technology had been available on the Wii for quite some time. It hasn't gathered much pace since then, but Sony is hoping that with the PC compatible SDK, the general public will find more uses for it.

Microsoft attempted a similar thing with the release of its own SDK for the Kinect motion tracking camera back in mid-2011, with many developers taking to YouTube to show off their new gesture controls, virtual light sabres and more. From there the software giant commercialised the system, making a fully Windows compatible version of the camera and releasing it a couple of weeks ago.

Sony has already trialled the SDK in the US, listing potential uses for the Move controller and PlayStation Eye camera on its official Move.Me page. Some suggested ones are:

  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  • Sports physiology and fitness training
  • Music and creative arts
  • Augmented reality and 3D
  • Addressing the needs of special education

If you want to have a play with the SDK, you'll need a PS3, a move motion controller, Eye Camera and a PC or similar device with internet connectivity. For a basic run down of where to begin, Sony also offers a user guide (PDF).
