Playstation Vita Firmware Update Smacks of Publicity Stunt

With the PlayStation Vita set to hit stores tomorrow, Sony has unveiled a new firmware to provide a day 0 update that feels a bit headline grabbing.

This is a very last minute patch for the hardware and completely smacks of gathering up extra publicity just before launch. As Sony itself has said, many of the updates proposed in this firmware update are already available to anyone that bought a First Edition Bundle and therefore has had the Vita for the last week.

Apparently there will be some "improvements" but considering the 1.6 update looked like this:

  • A new "Maps" application has been added
  • The photo application now allows for the taking of video as well as pictures
  • The Content Manager Assistant has now been updated to support Mac

And the latest 1.61 like this:

  • A new "Maps" application has been added
  • The photo application now allows for the taking of video as well as pictures
  • The Content Manager Assitant has now been updated to support Mac
  • Facebook is now linked with game reviews you've made
  • A list of people you've recently played with is now viewable

I think we know what Sony is up to.
