GiffGaff was hit by a big problem yesterday, as the Mobile Virtual Network Operator (which piggybacks on the O2 network) went down.
The major service outage was caused by a power failure at one of GiffGaff's data centres, the failure in turn being caused by a burst water pipe. On its blog page, the MVNO explained that the water damage to the computer network took nearly eight hours to rectify. By the end of the evening yesterday, however, all phone services were restored.
This morning at 8am, GiffGaff posted an update on its community noticeboard, noting that all members should have base and account services up and running. However, the company added that the service may still be "slow or intermittent".
A further update is expected in the next hour or so, and by this afternoon, with any luck, any issues with sluggishness should be resolved.
There may be some form of compensation for the outage in the offing, for those who feel aggrieved about the loss of service.
GiffGaff stated: "Some of you have asked about compensation - we're going to focus on fixing the issues we've had and make sure we have a stable service first - and then we'll sit down think of ways to make it up to you."
