Instagram And Hipstamatic In New Photo Sharing Partnership

The photo sharing powers of Instagram and Hipstamatic have reached new levels, thanks to a partnership between the two apps.

The iPhone-based photography apps have agreed to join forces, with Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom and Hipstamatic CEO Lucas Buick revealing the news to business magazine Fast Company; where the alliance will see photos taken from Hipstamatic and imported into Instagram directly.  Once the service is officially launched, Hipstamatic users will be able to merge their photos (including tags and comments) into Instagram - with photos to be labelled "Taken with Hipstamatic" that automatically links back to the app; instantly generating a large additional source of revenue for Hipstamatic.

Instagram founder Kevin Systrom said: "It's a step in the direction that we're testing out. We've been very careful about making sure that Instagram photos are about what's happening right now in your life, and we want to allow for more of those photos to end up on Instagram regardless of where they're taken."

Systrom explained that a trend was emerging in users editing their photos with Hipstamatic before uploading to Instagram - and that establishing such a partnership made sense.

Lucas Buick noted that Hipstamatic users were moving away from sharing via the Twitter and Facebook platforms and instead leaning more towards Instagram.

He said: "We've never been a social networking company, but we clearly benefit from social networks. So this will be the first app outside of Instagram that lets you into their network. That's pretty cool for us."
