Yesterday witnessed the sixth birthday of Twitter - when on 21st March 2006, co-founder Jack Dorsey published his first tweet: "Just setting up my twttr", but it seems the company has another reason to celebrate - announcing the fact that the service now has 140 million active users.
A blog post revealing this piece of good news also saw the company revel in the fact that the service experiences 340 million tweets daily: "That's more than 1 billion every three days," stated the post. "However concisely, it turns out there's plenty to say."
The total number of active users also represents the 40 per cent hike witnessed by the site, when September saw Twitter CEO Dick Costolo claim the company had approximately 100 million active users. Costolo said that each of those 100 million Tweeters logged in at least once a month, whilst 50 million use the site daily - however, the blog post did not disclose just how many of the 140 million active users used the site on a daily basis.
Costolo also went on to mention how handheld devices have helped increase Twitter's appeal, with 55 million users logging on to Twitter via their smartphone or tablet each month. Twitter.com itself receives 400 million hits a month alone, an impressive rise from the 250 million visits as claimed by Costolo back in September.
