Digital magazines look like they may have a bit of a revival as Next Issue Media has released 'Next Issue', a digital reader for magazines. Or Netflix for magazines.
Whilst many publishers now have their own app, which require separate subscriptions, the Next Issue app draws many big name publications into the one application - with one subscription fee.
The service starts at $9.99 for a basic plan, or $14.99 for the Unlimited Premium plan. Currently the service is not available in other countries, though Next Issue Media says it is looking to expand to outside the U.S.
The app is only available for Andriod tablets (running 3.0 or higher), but again, Next Issue Media says it will be making its service available for other platforms. An iPad version is listed as coming soon on their website.
The service is supported by big names such as Condé Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corporation and Time Inc. Available titles include: Better Homes and Gardens, Condé Nast Traveler, Esquire, Elle, Fortune, Glamour, Parents, People, Popular Mechanics, Real Simple, Sports Illustrated, TIME, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and many more.
Hearst's John Loughlin has been quick to emphasise that this venture is still very much an experiment. "Anybody that tells you that they have the answer, or that their model is the model that would be successful 5 years from now - they'd be suspect," comments Loughlin. "We're very much in a learning mode."
