Acer has announced that its Aspire A5 will be available in the last week of June.
The company also revamped its first ultrabook, the Aspire S3, supercharging it with a third-generation Intel Core i7 (Ivy Bridge) processor and solid state drives. It will debut in the US next week and a UK launch is expected shortly thereafter.
In Acer's estimation, the Aspire S5 is the thinnest ultrabook in the world, measuring 0.44in at its thinnest point and 0.59in at the thickest, and weighing 1.2kg.
Powered by a third-generation Intel Core i7 (Ivy Bridge) processor and equipped with a 256GB solid-state drive (SSD), the S5 comes decked out in an Onyx Black curved magnesium-alloy chassis with brushed metallic detailing. It also sports a 13.3in HD (1,366 x 768) LED display as well as a 1.3-megapixel HD webcam.
Additionally, the S5's overall streamlined form is enhanced by its innovative MagicFlip I/O Port. Concealed just below the hinge, the MagicFlip port pops out to reveal several hidden ports, including USB 3.0, HDMI, and Thunderbolt. Yes, you read that correctly: Thunderbolt. The Aspire S5 is the first ultrabook to feature a Thunderbolt I/O port, meaning that its transfer speeds of 10Gbps and ability to daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt-enabled devices leave it in a class of its own, at least until the competition catches up.
Its purported battery life is 6.5 hours of continuous use and 15 days in standby mode. The S5 is also Acer's first product to feature AcerCloud, a new interface that enables remote access to the system's contents via tablet or smartphone, even if the S5 is in sleep mode. Since AcerCloud won't be bundled on all Acer consumer PCs until the end of the year, S5 users will be among the first to indulge in this feature.
Like the Aspire S5, the newly revamped Aspire S3 is powered by a third-generation Intel Core i3 or i7 processor and packs a 256GB SSD. Its chassis is bathed in a new champagne colour and it weighs 1.35kg.
Pricing for Britain has yet to be revealed, but the the Aspire S5 will appear on Acer's US online store and at retail outlets across the pond for £900 ($1,399.99).
