The second version of the Samsung Chromebook, the XE550C22-A01UK, is currently on sale from online retailer SaveOnLaptops for just under £365.
The product is an improvement on the first generation Chromebooks that were launched last year. The engineers opted for a 1.3GHz Intel Celeron dual-core 867 processor, which is far faster than the previous Atom processor and comes with 2MB L2 cache.
It has a 12.1in, 1,280 x 800 LED display, 4GB of RAM, a 16GB SSD drive, an Intel NM10 chipset, GbE port, Wi-Fi, two USB 2.0 ports, a webcam, and a card reader. There's also a VGA out (but no HDMI), a claimed four hours battery life and a standard one-year warranty.
The device runs on the latest iteration of Chrome OS, but sadly it seems that Google’s decision to stick with Intel and some odd design issues (like the fact that it needs to be always online), means that this Chromebook is better than its predecessor but still not good enough for most users, especially at this price.
The free security software is Bullguard Internet Security, but there are three more options to choose from (at extra cost).
