After the long tail effect floods in Thailand in 2011 had on the average price of storage globally, it’s nice to see genuine hard disk drive bargains popping up again.
UK retailer Novatech is selling a Seagate Barracuda hard disk drive for as little as £103.98 including delivery; that’s 3.47p per GB, the lowest we’ve seen for a long time and just a small premium on the more expensive 2TB drives.
The drive itself – the ST3000DM001 - is a high performing one with a massive 64MB cache, a 7200RPM spinning speed, six heads, three 1TB platters, an 8.5ms seek time and a SATA 6Gbps interface.
Some reviewers have pointed out that the drive comes with two year warranty, is OEM (no fancy literature or boxing) and needs to be flashed with the latest firmware to make the most of it.
Also users need to make sure that their system is compatible with hard drives of this capacity before purchasing it.
Interestingly, the cost per GB of the Seagate Constellation ES.2 2TB drive, which comes with roughly the same specification, is roughly thrice that of the Barracuda.
