Telecoms giant BT has announced that it will give away free YouView set top boxes worth £299 to new customers on its Infinity package. Existing customers will have to fork out £49.
Other fees include a £56 activation and delivery charge and the YouView box comes with a 12-month contract. Those who are not in an Infinity-enabled area will be able to get the box when they subscribe to the TV Essential service for as little as £4 per month (£5 per month as of 2013).
BT is the second provider after Talktalk to offer a free YouView STB – which is almost certainly manufactured by Humax - to its customers.
Like similar Freeview HD and Freesat HD boxes, the device comes with a 500GB hard disk drive which is able to store up to 300 hours worth of SD content and 125 hours of HD and offers access to more than 100 TV and radio channels.
Though you need an aerial, it doesn’t require any external dish. It also offers on-demand content from BBC iPlayer and BT Vision, which the company claims is the largest library of video on-demand on YouView. The package will be available from 26 October.
