More than 200 nominees were trimmed down to just 12 winners at last night’s first annual Appsters Awards, which celebrate “excellence and achievement in the apps industry” in association with this week’s Apps World conference.

The top apps of 2012 in a dozen categories, including Best entertainment app, Best use of geo-location, and App Developer 2012, were announced and honoured at an event held at London’s Kensington Roof Gardens.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the response to this year’s call for nominees, and the extremely high standard of entries shows what rude health this industry is in, despite the uncertain economic environment,” said Apps World and Appsters founder Ian Johnson.

“It’s a really tough job for our judging panel, but that’s the way we like it. I’d like to extend congratulations to our shortlisted entries, and our sincere thanks to everyone who applied,” Johnson added.

The winners were determined by a panel of expert judges, who scored each nominee individually. The Start-up app 2012 honour, which was awarded to social music service Soundrop, was selected following a live pitch to attendees and judges at Apps World yesterday.

Mubaloo, the firm behind the MET Office’s weather app developer Mubaloo, won both the App Developer 2010 title and Appsters Champion 2012 award, after receiving the highest cumulative score from the panel.

“It’s been fantastic. Three and a half years ago, there were four of us in the show. We just had an inkling that the B2B and enterprise market was going to be huge,” said Mubaloo CEO Mark Mason. “These awards are the confirmation of all our hard work over the last three and a half years.”

Other notable winners include the BBC’s Olympics app and London 2012, which were awarded Best entertainment app and Best consumer app, respectively.
