IBM launches social media-savvy news site Smarter Trends

US tech giant IBM has launched a brand new website called Smarter Trends, helping those interested or involved with city planning, transport, energy, and other public sectors to keep in touch with the latest news from their industry.

Distinguishing the site from a traditional news portal is a focus on social media activity and the topics that are trending in each sector every day. The articles are published in terms of what’s receiving the most traction and interest online, so only the most relevant stories are brought to the reader’s attention. Easy share functions for Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and YouTube allow users to spread news and interact with peers in their field.

Content spans across 30 topic areas originating from a variety of sources, including national and international news outlets and social media. Tracking domestic news is enhanced by a UK map feature (above) which enables the reader to click on a location and bring up the current stories connected to that region.

IBM Smarter Trends says it intends to reach a “sought-after” and “notoriously difficult to reach” audience with the site, as it seeks to create a platform for public sector workers and city planners to communicate and share information.
