Facebook updates iOS app with new message and photo features

Facebook's iOS app has been updated this week, adding new web features to the mobile version of the social network.

Version 5.1 includes new messaging and photo features, as well as the ability to electronically send gifts to friends.

Facebook pulled the new features from its Facebook Messenger and Facebook Camera smartphone apps. From Messenger, Facebook added the option to swipe left anywhere in the app to see who's available or send a message. Users can also add the friends they message most to the top of their Favorites.

From Camera, meanwhile, a new upload flow will allow users to share multiple photos faster.

Finally, Facebook Gifts, which allows Facebook users to send physical gifts to their friends, has been activated on mobile, but only in the US. Gifts debuted on Facebook.com in September; click the "Give him/her a gift" link on your newsfeed or a friend's profile to get started.

Facebook gave iOS users a boost in August, when the social network updated its app with speeds twice as fast as its predecessor. With Facebook 5.0, the app opened faster, and sped up newsfeed scrolling and opening photos.

The updated app is currently available for free in the Apple App Store.
