Halo 4 enjoys £189 million in global sales

Halo 4, the current iteration of the iconic gaming series has reaped $300 million (£189 million) in global sales after its first week at retail, making it the biggest launch in franchise history, reports Microsoft.

The first 24 hours of the games launch saw sales to the amount of $220 million (£138 million), surpassing all previous movie US box office records and making it the biggest entertainment launch of the year.

The records continued to tumble as Microsoft also announced that Halo 4 amassed the highest population of players that the series has ever seen, recording 4 million players within its first five days of release, all of whom played a cumulative 31.4 million hours.

The Halo series has always been a strong performer for Microsoft with previous games Halo 3 bringing in $170 million (£107 million) and Halo Reach earning $200 million (£126 million). Yet Halo 4 was still plagued by an air of uncertainty as it was the first game in the franchise not to be produced by original creators Bungie. The series is now under the care of 343 Industries who will be ecstatic with how the game has outstripped its predecessor’s performance, a sentiment that Microsoft also shares.

"We're thrilled that 'Halo 4' has emerged as the biggest U.S. entertainment launch of the year," said corporate VP of Microsoft Studios, Phil Spencer.

"Thanks to the millions of fans worldwide who helped make this another record-breaking launch for the 'Halo' franchise, 'Halo 4' is kicking off a strong holiday season and has become the must-have blockbuster experience of the year."
