Vimeo has released a preview version of its new pay-to-view service.
The purpose of the service is to empower content producers, who will be able to determine pricing, geographic availability, bonus content and even how long something will be available for.
To mark the occasion, Vimeo has made six full-length films available for purchase on its website, all of which vary in terms of pricing and availability. For example, “Shut Up and Play the Hits” is only accessible to UK users, at $6.99 (£4.40), while “We are Legion: The Story of Hacktivists” is limited to US users for $4.99 (£3.15).
“Our goal is to provide an open and flexible platform that allows all creators and content owners to earn revenue directly from their audiences,” said Vimeo CEO, Kerry Trainor. “We’re really excited to offer this selection of high quality movies in our preview, and we look forward to working with creators worldwide whose stories have a clear home on Vimeo.”
Once purchased, a video will automatically appear on your “Watch Later” list, and will be viewable through a number of compatible services and devices, such as Samsung TV, Roku, iPads and regular Internet browsers.
The pay-to-view appetiser was first announced in September and follows Vimeo’s introduction of Tip Jar, which allows users to show their appreciation for a video by making a cash payment to its creator.
According to a Vimeo blog post, the full pay-to-view service will become available to all Vimeo Pro users early next year.Leave a comment on this article
