Rarely does a brand-new dual-core smartphone cost so little. The Sony Xperia U, which was only launched in February 2012 at MWC in Barcelona, is now available from only £121 from Virgin Media on PAYG. The deal not only includes £10 top up but also 12 months’ worth of free data allowance – that’s 1GB of data per month and worth £60 on its own.
The phone is the first to feature an ST-Ericsson dual-core system-on-chip, the Novathor U8500, which is clocked at 1GHz. It also has a 3.5in 854 x 480 pixel display, which yields one of the highest pixel densities among mainstream devices on the UK market.
Other features include 512MB of RAM, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a rear 5-megapixel camera and a front VGA one, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 8GB of onboard storage and a tiny body.
The only two issues with the smartphone are the facts that it doesn’t have an expansion slot and that it is locked to Virgin Mobile.
