LG releases £23,000 84in ultra HD 4K TV in the UK

LG has launched its first Ultra HD TV in the UK, priced at nearly £23,000.

The massive 84in LG 84LM960V was unveiled today at The Gadget Show Live in London and will be available to buy in select stores across the country.

Ultra High-Definition, the name given to 4K just last month by the Consumer Electronics Association, refers to giant-screen TVs with more than eight million pixels of resolution, four times the resolution of current high-definition televisions.

Whereas standard HD TVs on the market display content at 1080p (1,920 by 1,080 pixels), or slightly lower 1080i or 720p resolution, the LG has a resolution of approximately 4,000 by 2,000.

The LG TV joins the Toshiba 55ZL2 as the first ultra HD devices available in the UK, as the latter went on sale in the summer at the slightly more reasonable price of £7,000. The former was originally showcased at IFA in Berlin earlier this year and has already been on sale in South Korea.

As well as the superior screen definition, the LG TV also features Smart TV and 3D Cinema technology that can convert 2D content into 3D. It also has a Dual Play feature that allows gamers to simultaneously see different images on the same screen.

"We are proud to be the first to offer UK consumers Ultra High Definition technology for their homes, with our 84-inch LM960V that is as impressive in functionality as it is in size," said Stephen Gater, LG's Consumer Marketing Director.

"It wowed the audiences at IFA, and representing every advanced technology that we are proud to offer as a TV manufacturer, we are confident that it will capture the imagination of the UK public as they get to see it up close for the first time," he added.

Despite its ground-breaking technology, a recent report from market research firm HIS iSuppli stated that demand for ultra HD TV will remain marginal due to the limited content available to make full use of its capabilities. Although, LG does insist that its TV has a Resolution Upscaler feature that allows standard or high definition images to be rendered in higher detail making content more accessible.

The 84in LG 84LM960V will go on sale at John Lewis Sloane Square, Bentalls Kingston, Richer Sounds Southampton as well as at Harrods in Knightsbridge. The TV will also tour around venues across the UK including the Bullring in Birmingham (December 7) Westfield Stratford (December 13) and the Trafford Centre in Manchester (December 21).
