The Times offering Nexus 7 for £50 alongside subscription

The Times is subsidising the Nexus 7 tablet as part of its subscription package, it has been announced.

The only UK newspaper to impose a paywall is offering a 32GB Nexus 7, worth £199, for a mere £50 – the catch being that it has to be bought alongside an 18-month subscription to its Digital Pack.

The subscription provides access to the newspaper's web and mobile app content. The package is similar to those sold by mobile phone operators on the latest handsets, whereby they subsidise the handset and recoup the money through premium monthly phone plans.

In this case, The Times subscription package works out to £17.33 per month, bringing the overall cost of the tablet and access to digital content to £361.94, which is reduced to £299 if the customer opts to pay upfront.

The Times seems to be following in the footsteps of Amazon, which has admitted to selling hardware such as its Kindle range at little or no profit in the hope of making money from the content, namely eBooks, that it sells for the device.

Although no figures have been released, The Times digital editorial director Tom Whitwell has told paidContent that the deal is off to a "very strong start."
