Temple Run 2 swings into life and runs up iPhone app chart

Imangi Studios has released the follow-up to Temple Run, its wildly popular "endless runner" mobile game.

Despite only becoming available earlier today, Temple Run 2 has soared to the top of the iPhone free download chart, garnering nearly 250 positive user reviews at the time of publication.

We're looking forward to taking the Indiana Jones-inspired game for a proper spin on the commute home tonight, but a quick glance tells us that winning Temple Run formula is still in place. The game's freemium aspect is still admirably understated, while controls are identical to the previous version: simple screen swipes and phone tilts that even Nan could understand.

The most radical overhaul in Temple Run 2 is the graphics, which have gotten a major boost. Some of the power-ups have been slightly tweaked as well, and characters now boast unique features. The pack of crazed monkey pursuers from the original title have been supplanted by a lone demonic King Kong, and your escape methods have been expanded to include Tarzan-esque rope glides (see image, top).

OK, it's not exactly Assassin's Creed 3, but it's still a standout means of distraction for all the bus journeys and bank queues that make up all-too-significant parts of the daily grind.

Temple Run 2 is now available for free download on the iOS app store, while Android users will have to wait until next week to get to know the new and improved Guy Dangerous.

There's no word yet on when a Windows Phone version might appear, though Imangi said it was committed to developing for Microsoft's mobile platform last year.
