Panasonic unleashes Twin HD Tuners on its TVs

Today at its European Convention in Nice, Panasonic announced a new feature for its line of Viera Smart TVs. The Twin HD Tuner feature will be available on the upper echelons of the range, and will allow users to view or record multiple sources simultaneously.

For UK customers this essentially means that each Viera Smart TV will come equipped with four HD tuners – two Freesat tuners and two Freeview HD tuners. This means that you’ll be able to preview other channels while you continue watching your current channel, as well as being able to record one programme while watching another.

It’s possible to record two HD channels at the same time, but you’ll need to be using a USB 3.0 hard disk due to the significant data throughput required.

Another great feature is Watch and Share, where the signal from the second tuner can be sent directly to a tablet or smartphone, allowing one viewer to watch the TV, while the other watches a different programme on their mobile device. The second programme can also be streamed to a second DLNA enabled Smart TV.

Of course the problem with the Twin HD Tuner feature is that we rely heavily on Sky for our high definition content in the UK. Obviously you’re not going to be able to plug your Sky subscription card into the TV, and therefore you can’t watch, record or stream anything coming from Sky.

That said, if you’re currently reliant on Freeview and Freesat, this latest addition to the Viera feature set will be a very attractive one.
