If you want to get your hands on a portable device with Windows 8 on a budget, then look no further than the Compaq CQ58-260SA from HP which costs a mere £249 at PC World including free delivery. This is a refurbished model but still comes with one year standard warranty.
This laptop is powered by a dual-core Intel Celeron B830 processor clocked at 1.8GHz with 2MB L3 cache, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard disk drive, a DVD writer, three USB ports (no USB 3.0 though), a 15.6in BrightView 1,366 x 768 pixel display, an Ethernet port, a card reader, a HD webcam, two Altec Lansing speakers, a 6-cell battery that offers up to seven hours battery life, VGA and HDMI ports and Windows 8.
The laptop doesn’t come with a dedicated numeric keypad, which is a shame and at 31mm thick is chubbier than we’d expect.
For those wondering how badly this Celeron-based laptop will perform, it is safe to say that it won’t be as bad as many would expect because Windows 8 handles hardware resources better than its predecessors and these new Celerons are based on the Sandy Bridge architecture.
Note that this same laptop costs £299 at HP's direct store.
