Zynga is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its popular Draw Something game with news that the app has surpassed 100 million downloads.
“For context, getting into that club is just a bit harder than getting backstage at a Jay-Z concert,” the company wrote in a blog post.
The milestone comes with other impressive stats, including 190 countries playing the game in 13 languages, as well as a library of more than 11 million Lady Gaga drawings. Not to mention the total 28,000 years spent drawing since the app launched on 24 February, 2012.
In March 2012, Zynga acquired Draw Something and more than 35 other titles, when it snagged gamemaker OMGPOP for an estimated £118 million. The Pictionary-like game was downloaded more than 35 million times in its first six weeks on the iOS and Android market. It’s currently available for free or £1.99 for an ad-free version. Draw Something pulled off an iTunes hat trick when it topped the App Store’s paid, free, and top grossing charts within two months.
Early adoption turned Draw Something into an instant hit, garnering more than 50 million downloads in 50 days. But interest in the game dropped off within three months; Zynga was losing 4 million daily active users by late spring, falling from the peak 14.6 million on April 3. In early May 2012, data tipped about 10.2 million daily active users, dropping at a steady pace.
Still, Zynga is gripping onto this milestone for dear life, hoping it means good news for a company that spent much of 2012 struggling to stay afloat.
Late last month, chief game designer Brian Reynolds announced his departure from the company — the most recent in a long line of low moments, including less-than-stellar quarterly earnings amid rounds of layoffs and office closures. Additionally, Zynga faced criticism over its reliance on Facebook, was accused of lifting existing game concepts, and even faced a lawsuit over poor financial results following its IPO back in December 2011.Leave a comment on this article
