Having seen its business suffer substantially due to declining PC sales, HP seems to have marked the ever-expanding tablet market as a key part of its future. At MWC, the company announced the HP Slate 7, a 7in Android 4.1 tablet, scheduled for April 2013 launch. However, the Slate 7 may be just the beginning of a string of new HP tablets the company plans to roll out this year.
The revelation came from Alberto Torres, the senior vice president of HP’s Mobility Global Business unit, speaking to the Verge.
“HP is the number one PC manufacturer in the world, and we want to be the number one computer vendor in the world. That means we need to be in the tablet space,” said Torres in an effort to highlight the company’s growing efforts to cash in on the growing popularity of tablet computers.
Torres also hinted that later this year, HP will release a new “work and play” tablet, which, alongside the entertainment-focused Slate 7, could give the company some leverage in the Apple-dominated worldwide tablet market.
“I’m a big believer that you need to have a focused portfolio of great products, not carpet-bombing the world… but whatever is the winning product in the US might not have the same success in India and China, and we’re a global company,” Torres said.
“You’ll definitely see more products from us this year,” he added.
