MWC 2013: Samsung follows Apple's Passbook lead with new Wallet app

Samsung has announced Wallet, a new ticket and coupon management app that will allow users access to virtually the same features that Apple has been offering in its popular Passbook app.

Introduced during a developers conference at Mobile World Congress 2013, the new Samsung app enable users to safely store their membership cards, tickets, boarding passes and coupons in a secure and easy-to-access location.

In addition to providing real-time updates on boarding pass changes and membership card points, Wallet also sports a time- and location-based push notification. Passes stored in the app can be scanned at payment locations, though there is no NFC integration so far.

The app is currently available as a preview for developers, and will soon make its way to Samsung's app store. The company said third-party app integration will be allowed, though it will have to be approved by Samsung before being allowed into the Wallet app.

Samsung recently confirmed that it plans to launch the much-anticipated Galaxy S4 smartphone on 14 March, at which point we're likely to find out about more new features the firm has in store for its next-generation handsets.
