HP Elitebook 9470M preview: A potent, practical Ultrabook

The HP Elitebook 9470M is an Ultrabook aimed at the business segment. It's also a great option if you're looking for a potent and versatile laptop. Elitebook is what HP calls its most business-oriented laptops, and they come with security features and a docking port.

The Elitebook Folio 9470m is a 14-inch Ultrabook. The design perhaps isn't as striking as a Samsung Series 9, but it reminds us a bit of the MacBook Pro. It's certainly a compliment as the Elitebook name used to be synonymous with conservative design rather than deluxe. It definitely has its own feel, different from an Apple product. The soft-touch finish of the chassis is nice to the touch, and it provides more grip than a standard aluminium chassis.

When you flip open the laptop you see a modern business laptop. The 9470m has a large multitouch touchpad that features the standard buttons. Many recent laptops no longer have these, but here you get four, and the Folio 9470m also has a trackpoint like many other business notebooks. The touchpad has a glass finish, and the top layer gives it a pleasant feel. You can quickly enable and disable the touchpad by tapping the upper left corner. There is a fingerprint reader.

The laptop has a good keystroke, not too heavy and with lots of feeling. The keyboard is backlit, and there are plenty of connectors. You get three USB 3.0 ports, a DisplayPort, VGA and an Ethernet port. You also get a memory card reader and SmartCard reader. A nice detail is that the power connector is a standard HP one, so you'll be able to use power adapters from many other HP laptops. Included is a compact 35W adapter. The Ultrabook weighs 1.63 kg, about average. When you take the features and quality finish into consideration, it's relatively light.
