A month after buying news app Summly for a reported $30 million (£20 million), Yahoo rolled out a new iOS mobile experience that incorporates its newest acquisition.
“Beautifully designed with smaller screens in mind, the new Yahoo is all about delivering the best of the Web – right on your phone,” Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said in a blog post.
The updated iOS Yahoo app incorporates Summly’s natural-language algorithms to serve up quick story summaries.
“We acquired Summly less than a month ago, and we’re thrilled to introduce this game-changing technology in our first mobile application,” Mayer wrote. “With the immersive imagery of our virtually endless newsfeed, the updated Yahoo app has both great technology and beautiful design front and center.”
London teenager Nick D’Aloisio added Summly to the App Store in November, and then watched it rise to ninth place within two hours of its American release. D’Aloisio, who is now part of the Yahoo team, designed the application when he was 15 years old, and turned it into a multimillion-dollar venture just two years later.
The app update, meanwhile, also includes an update to search functionalities, like better video and image search.
Users can personalise their news by selecting the types of stories that interest them: business, science, entertainment, sports, etc. Each article showcases more topics that may be of interest, and allows the user to hide those that aren’t.
Once signed into the mobile or web version of Yahoo, those choices are saved across applications, making the search site more relevant on all screens.
