Meet the HTC R7: the Windows Blue mini-tablet set to rival Apple's iPad mini

HTC will launch with a pair of high-end tablets running the RT version of Microsoft's eagerly anticipated Windows Blue update (née Windows 8.1) later this year, PhoneArena claims citing a mystery informant.

The Taiwanese manufacturer will debut the duo, thought to be dubbed the R7 and R12, in Q3 according to the web site's anonymous tipster.

Packing a beefy quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 SoC complete with 2GB of RAM, the HTC R7 will be a 7in mini-tablet featuring a Full HD (1080p) display that comfortably trumps the 1,024 x 768 resolution found on the well-loved Apple iPad mini.

The R7 could also sport a 13-megapixel camera and support the 4G LTE wireless standard. Rounding out a really zippy spec sheet, the small form factor HTC device is expected to offer 16GB of on-board storage plus a microSD card slot.

In turn, the HTC R12 will be a 12in slate that offers similar internals, but ups the ante in the display department with a Retina-matching resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels.

With regards to a release date, the report tips the HTC R7 and R12 to launch on 13 October. We're sure this isn't the last we'll hear of the high-end pair before then, so stay tuned for more.

News of the nascent Windows tablet duo comes as HTC looks to recover from a subpar early-2013 fiscal showing. The Taiwanese manufacturer failed to meet a number of key Q1 targets due to supply issues affecting its new flagship Android smartphone, the HTC One.
