Your home could just get a little bit smarter with the addition of Belkin's Wi-Fi-enabled WeMo Light Switch, which hit the market this week with a £39.99 price tag.
For those dark nights, when you've just watched a horror movie and can't find the light switch fast enough, just unlock your mobile device, tap a few buttons, and the WeMo will illuminate any part of your home before you even enter the room.
The sleek WeMo can replace any standard light switch, in easy do-it-yourself fashion, and is accessible on any Android 4.0+ device and all iOS 5+ machines.
Users simply need to download the WeMo app, then schedule a driveway light to turn on after dark, or ensure that lights are always on when kids come home from after-school activities.
The application also allows for more customised schedules, like turning lights on and off at different times in different ways — even in response to the sun. By entering the name of your city, the WeMo app programmes outdoor lights to turn on at sunset and off at sunrise, no matter the season.
Belkin boasts features like smart programming, that keeps the correct time and date during power outages, no minimum wattage to allow the switch to work with all incandescent, halogen, CFL, fluorescent, and LED lighting, as well as the ability to control ceiling fans. Plus, since there's no battery to wear out, the WeMo light switch remains pretty hassle-free.
Subtle backlighting also creates a sort of nightlight effect, and makes the switch easy to find in the dark.
The electronics maker offered a sneak peek of its Internet-connected switch during January's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where Belkin also revealed the Thunderstorm Handheld Home Theater — a speaker dock system for the iPad.
Previously, WeMo gadgets - like the Belkin WeMo Switch + Motion - were only compatible with iOS devices, but this is no longer the case. "With more than a billion Android devices expected by 2014 according to Gartner, expanding WeMo capabilities to Android devices is a necessary step for the continued success and evolution of the WeMo brand," Ohad Zeira, director of product management at Belkin, said in a statement.
