Online retailer Overclockers is selling, for this week only, the OCZ Vertex 2E Bigfoot SSD (otherwise known as the OCZSSD3-2VTX480G) for a mere £138. This is a 480GB model, which means that a pair of these would approach 1TB (960GB to be more precise) and would still cost a mere £276, which translates in a per GB cost of 28.8p.
That is still far higher than the 2.5p some large capacity magnetic hard disk drive cost but still qualifies as the cheapest GB for a SSD device on the market. And the name Bigfoot is probably not a coincidence as well as it was that of a very popular range of low-cost hard disk drive from a decade ago.
Unusually for a SSD, the Vertex 2E has a 3.5in form factor which makes it ideal for any desktop as it doesn't need an adaptor. It has a read/write speed of 250MBps and 210MBps with sustained writes of up to 160MBps.
Nothing exceptional but still plenty fast. Other important metrics include a sustained write speed of 180MBps and random 4K writes of 15KIOPS. Note that It comes with three years warranty.
