First batch of Jolla smartphones sold out

Jolla’s first batch of smartphones have sold out with online pre-orders coming in from 136 countries for the handsets that run on an alternative to the Android OS, Sailfish.

The Finnish mobile phone maker released its first device at the #JollaLoveDay event in May when pre-orders also commenced and the first batch sold out by mid-July with anyone that paid a little extra bagging themselves a free gift in the process.

“We are delighted to see this great worldwide interest towards our very first device. When you see someone wearing an ‘I am the First One’ T-shirt, you see a proud future owner of Jolla,” says Tomi Pienimäki, CEO of Jolla.

The amount of devices that have been secured is a closely guarded secret with the company mentioning customer confidentiality when asked about the first batch number on their Twitter account. The closest we get to finding out the amount of units shipped is a quote obtained by TNW from a Jolla spokesperson.

“Our view on the size of the production batch for a mobile device vendor of this size is typically 50,000 units,” said the spokesperson.

Jolla’s phone will set customers back €399 [£340] for the basic model with the company stating back in May that an extra €40 [£34] would bag customers a t-shirt, and an extra €100 [£85] gives them a €100 [£85] phone discount voucher, limited edition smartphone and the t-shirt.

The device is Android-app compliant, has a 4.5in screen, dual-core processor, support for 4G LTE, 16GB on-board storage, a microSD slot, 8-megapixel camera, and a user-replaceable battery.

Sailfish, the mobile OS that the phone runs on, was formed from the ashes of the MeeGo OS created by the merger of Intel and Nokia’s Moblin and Maemo platforms.

Devices will start shipping to European countries by the end of 2013 with Finnish operator DNA the first carrier anywhere in the world to stock the device. For those that missed out on the first batch, Jolla will be putting another glut of the devices up for pre-order in the autumn.
