ExaGrid Systems looking to expand hybrid cloud DR solution into UK and Europe

Disk-based backup hardware specialist ExaGrid Systems has revealed that it is looking to expand its hybrid cloud disaster recovery solution into Europe and grow its global user base, which currently accounts for roughly 15 per cent of the firm's customers.

In partnership with ATScloud, ExaGrid currently offers Secure BDRcloud in the US, a DRaaS product that allows users to replicate onsite backups to a fully managed Tier IV data centre environment via the cloud for a monthly fee.

Pushing into Europe would require new localised partnerships similar to the one currently enjoyed with ATScloud, but ExaGrid's executives are confident that such a move is on the cards sooner rather than later.

"Right now, this is only available in the US but we're looking about how to scale it across the world. We've had some good traction with this partnership so far, so it's something we're looking to globalise in the near future," commented Marc Crespi, ExaGrid vice president of product management, at the company's headquarters in Westborough, Massachusetts.

Since first bringing its data backup and deduplication solutions to market in 2006, ExaGrid has raised over $100 million in funding, with backers including Lehman Brothers Venture Partners, 

A relative David in a data backup market that features Goliath players like EMC, Symantec, HP, and Dell, the firm has enjoyed considerable success of late, raking in some $35 million (£21m) of revenue in 2012.

In addition, ExaGrid's products were named as a best in class solution in the 2013 DCIG Buyer's Guides, dominating the Midrange Deduplication Backup Appliance Under $50k (£31k) and Midrange Deduplication Backup Appliance Under $100k (£62k) reports. 

Going forward, ExaGrid said its continued prosperity depended on its ability to expand distribution and scale up storage thresholds, but appeared confident that the differentiated nature of its products would ensure success in the future.

"If we didn't have a differentiated product, we wouldn't have 1,700 customers and still be growing...There is no one answer to disaster recovery. It's a continuum of answers inside an organisation, because they're going to have different types of disaster recovery for different applications...It all comes down to: how long do you have to bring things up?" said ExaGrid president and CEO Bill Andrews.
