Huawei Ascend P7 vs Sony Xperia Z2: Full spec comparison

Huawei have waded into the high-spec smartphone market with their latest release, the Huawei Ascend P7. But how does it compare to its competitor from Sony, the impressive Xperia Z2?

Let's break down all the specs and take a look.

Display

Sony's Xperia Z2 gains a lot of praise for its screen, and Huawei have made sure not to miss out on that action. The Ascend P7 has a slightly smaller screen, packing in the same resolution as the Xperia Z2 to bring the PPI up to 441PPI.

The Sony Xperia Z2's 5.2in is also pretty large for a smartphone screen, so that's down to the taste of the user.

CPU, GPU and RAM

The Xperia really comes out on top in processing power. With 2.3 GHz under Sony's bonnet, the Xperia Z2 should run significantly snappier than its rival from Huawei, which only brings 1.8 GHz to the table. That's without even taking into consaideration the whopping 3GB of RAM Sony packs into its flagship phone, compared to the 2GB of the Huawei Ascend P7.

Size and weight

The Huawei Ascend P7 is lighter than the Xperia Z2, and smaller in ever dimension. Its svelte 139.8 x 68.8 x 6.5mm looks practically tiny next to the Xperia's 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2 mm, and Huawei's phone is a full 34g lighter than Sony's at 124g compared to the Xperia Z2's 158g.

Battery

Once again Sony comes out on top with this one. The Xperia Z2's 3,200 mAh battery packs much more juice than Huawei's Ascend P7 - although don't forget that Sony's larger screen and higher clock speed does sap more power from the system. Still, you'll get an average 12 hours on the Xperia Z2 compared to a maximum of 14 on the Ascend P7.

Cameras

Huawei made a massive pitch at the selfie market during the Ascend P7 release. With an 8-megapixel front camera, this is the real differentiator compared to the Xperia Z2's 2.2-megapixel camera. However, people who like to take photos of things other than themselves might be slightly disappointed with the Ascend P7's fairly average 13-megapixel camera.

Compared to the awesome 20.7 megapixels of Sony's front camera, that starts to look a little small.

So Huawei's betting on selfies - and if that's what you use your camera for most often, the Ascend P7 could be a good bet for you too.

Memory and price

Huawei is retailing its phone at €449 (£367), though UK prices have yet to be announced. That's significantly cheaper than the Xperia Z2's high end £599 price tag. All in all, the Huawei Ascend P7 is a good budget competitor for the likes of the Sony Xperia Z2, although users who have deeper pockets would be mad to choose Huawei's offering over the spectacular Z2.
