BT joins Siemens in Corporate Unified Communications venture
Former UK Telecom monopoly BT is teaming up with German IT Services specialist Siemens to deliver converged communication solution (otherwise known as unified comms) targeting multinational and Fortune 500 companies.
The two companies will bring together complementary parts - Siemens' OpenScape suite of communications software applications and OpenScale services with BT's MPLS network - in a global agreement.
The solution will seek to help companies trim millions by removing unwanted complexity and risk associated with moving to a new platform as well as improving collaboration and simplify associated business processes.
BT and Siemens decided to come together because they have collaborated closely in previous assignments in different sectors; both however still have ongoing partnerships with other companies such as AT&T, Microsoft and SAP for Siemens and Cisco, HP and Nortel for BT.
Commenting on the announcement, Wu Zhou, Senior Analyst at IDC said, "The dilemma for CIOs is that the demands of maintaining their existing IT infrastructures command so much of their budgets that little is left for true innovation, so while many if not most CIOs now recognize the clear advantages of IP-based converged communications, they cannot see how to get there without a lot of cost and complexity that can adversely impact the business."
