In its attempt to bolster its advertising revenues, YouTube will start featuring full-length movies and programs from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s (MGM) archives, through an agreement announced on Monday.
The agreement would offer a win-win situation for both the partner companies, as it would help YouTube in catching up Hulu, a NBC-Fox joint venture platform, which offers content from some of the major production houses, whereas MGM would get the required exposure by pushing its content on the world’s largest video sharing website.
MGM will initiate the partnership by posting episodes of its “American Gladiator” show, along with some action packed films like, “Bulletproof Monk”, and “The Magnificent Seven”, and clips from its famous movies like, “Legally Blonde”.
Until now, YouTube primarily features short clips of videos of around ten minutes or less, and this Google owned video platform has been experimenting with full-length video contents with CBS Corp’s Showtime networks and Time Warner’s HBO.
For instance, YouTube already has a similar partnership with CBS Corp. to feature its full length shows, including “Beverley Hills 90210”, “Star Trek”, and “Young and the Restless”.
MGM is the producer of new James Bond movie “Quantum of Solace” and Tom Cruise’s forthcoming film “Valkyrie”, but the availability of these movies on YouTube’s platform isn’t indicated yet.
