Asus has launched a laptop that could claim the title of fastest gaming notebook ever with a 17-inch screen, for those who can spare at least £2000 and don't mind lugging a big laptop around.
Asus's G71 (Republic of Gamers) packs an impressive Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300 processor running at 2.53GHz, which is more likely to be found in mobile/desktop Workstations like the Dell Precision M6000, than in gaming machine.
There's also a Geforce 9700M GPU from Nvidia, which comes with half a Gigabyte of GDDR3 video memory as well as 4GB of DDR3 memory clocked at 1066MHz. The sub-system is completed by a pair of 250GB hard disk drives which should easily match their desktop counterparts when used in RAID-0.
The massive chassis is home to a 17-inch LCD display capable of displaying a breathtaking 1920x1200 pixels. The laptop has a smaller LCD screen which is reserved for Instant Messaging purposes only and build into the monitor frame is a 2MP webcam, useful during gaming sessions.
Other features include 802.11n Wireless connectivity, HDMI and eSATA ports, as well as two speakers and a sub-woofer. And Asus has also thrown in a few tweaks like the programmable chassis lighting and specific gaming keys.
So how does it compare with the competition. Well, the Alienware's Area 51 M15X Laptop is faster than the G71. But it comes with a 15.4-inch screen only and cost nearly £1000 when fully kitted. The Voodoo Envy is unfortunately still not available for Sale in the UK. If you don't mind a dual core CPU, then the Acer Aspire 8930G might just be what you need with its 18.4-inch LCD screen and Geforce 9700M.
