BT Brings Broadband To Isolated Welsh Villages

Six villages in Wales, where high speed broadband connections are not available yet, have now been assured of access to faster broadband connectivity, after the Welsh assembly intervened in the matter.

Residents of one of the towns of Wales, Gwytherin in Conwy, had warned of legal action against BT for not providing broadband in their area.

But, the Welsh assembly had temporarily resolved the issue, by assuring Gwytherin residents that the town is there in the list of six broadband “not-spots” in Wales which are to be upgraded in near future.

In addition to Gwytherin, the other five villages on the list that will receive speedier broadband connectivity include, Saundersfoot, Reynoldston, Cilcennin, and Llanpumsaint and Bronwydd Arms.

The assembly asserted that the “preparatory work” will kick start with immediate effect to deploy the broadband network in communities, and the project would partly fuelled by Openreach, BT’s access network arm, and it will provide broadband access to 1,000 households and businesses for the first time.

Commenting on the occasion, Clwyd West MP David Jones said in a statement, “This is excellent news for the villagers of Gwytherin, which is presently the largest community in north Wales without a proper internet service”.

All these six villages will be upgraded with fast broadband connections, in the wake of government’s Regional Innovative Broadband Support (RIBS) programme, where BT would provide half of the funding under the project.
