BT plans to lay a 70Km long fiber optic submarine cable that will connect the Scottish mainland with the Northern Isles and is the latest in a series of of updates aimed at bringing the Faroe Islands, Orkney and Shetland closer to the broadband revolution.

Global Marine Systems will be commissioned to install the cable which will complement the existing microwave radio infrastructure that is currently in use.

BT acknowledges that more will have to be done in order to improve the quality of service and has pledged to upgrade the 60 exchanges BT has around the island.

In related news, the company has announced that it will rehaul more than 1000 exchanges across the whole of Scotland.

The ex-Telecom monopoly has long complained about the fact that it has to invest massively to connect often remote places to the rest of the digital world.
