  • Gartner Identifies Green IT, Cloud Computing and Web 2.0 as Future of Tech

12 August, 2008, by Desire Athow
Research analyst firm Gartner has revealed what it seems are the five main tech-centric ideas that will affect businesses in the next five years, after exiting what it calls the "trough of disillusionment".

Green IT, cloud computing, social computing platforms, video tele-presence (or video conferencing) and microblogging are likely to emerge from the lot and live up to their promises.

Already economic factors (amongst others) are pushing forward these five aforementioned trends up the agenda of many corporate entities.

The rising price of oil and related services/commodities, concerns for the environment, green PR, economies of scale and the need to stay in touch with the base being the main causes behind their success.

Eight out of a list of 27 emerging technologies are likely to bring benefits to the corporate world according to the document called "Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies 2008"

Jackie Fenn, vice-president and Gartner Fellow, commented on the report release saying 'Although Web 2.0 is now entering the trough of disillusionment, it will emerge within two years to have transformational impact, as companies steadily gain more experience and success with both the technologies and the cultural implications'
