Freesat Sells 100,000 HD Boxes In Five Months, Connects With Sky Dishes
Riding on the increasing popularity of free high definition (HD) services, Freesat has been able to sell more than 100,000 set-top boxes during its initial five months of launch
Freesat, from BBC and ITV is a free to air digital satellite television service that offers over 130 digital TV and radio channels and subscription free HD TV programmes.
Interestingly sporting events like Olympics, Euro 2008 and Wimbledon also have a fair share in driving the sales of Freesat in last few months.
Moreover the company is optimistic that its sales figures will continue to increase in the run up to the holiday season and beyond.
In a related statement, Emma Scott, the MD of Freesat, mentioned that people really enjoy watching shows in high definition and success of Freesat is a testament to this fact.
She however noted that a lot of people were under the impression that they are watching HD just because they had a HD ready TV while not yet having a HD receiver.
Emma went on to add that “Without an HD digital receiver connected to an HD Ready TV or an integrated TV with Freesat HD built in you can't watch an HD TV programme”
She also confirmed that old Sky dishes should be compatible with Freesat HD, much to the chagrin of archrivals, Sky (thanks to Techradar for that tidbit).
