Tech Lady Made A Dame By The Queen

Professor Wendy Hall, whose works influenced the development of the semantic web and digital libraries, has been appointed DBE for services to science and technology.

Widely viewed as one of the most talented minds in her field, she started her career at the University of Southampton computer science group 25 years ago, having completed her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the same university.

A pioneer in Cyberspace whose motto is "Where there is no vision, the people perish", she created the "Open Hypermedia System" and founded with Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Southampton professor Nigel Shadbolt and MIT's Daniel Weitzner the Web Science Research Initiative. 

Professor Dame Hall, as she will now be known, was the first woman to be elected Senior Vice-President of the Royal Academy of Engineering and has been a staunch advocate of gender equality.

She was made a CBE in 2000 and was also one of three ECS professors to be included in the ICT 2008 Hall of Fame.

A very inspirational figure indeed on par with the likes of Carly Fiorina. Technology is still unfortunately very much dominated by one gender and Professor Wendy Hall has, in her own words, shattered many glass ceilings and helped in promoting the role of women in Science, Engineering and Technology.
