The Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) has revealed by Activision Modern Warfare 2 has managed to sell nearly 1.8 million units of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 in the UK in its first week.

According to GfK Chart-Track, this is by far, the highest grossing video game in the industry of UK entertainment and is estimated to have brought in £67.4 million based on an average selling price of £37.87.

Observers highlight the fact that the Xbox 360 version was by some distance the most popular version with more than one million units sold, far ahead the PS3 and the PC version.

Even more telling is the fact that MW2 has raked in twice as much as the rest of the entertainment software market last week. Xbox 360 was particularly well presented partly because of a number of Xbox 360 special edition bundles that were put on sale.

Michael Rawlinson, director general, ELSPA, acclaimed MW2 achievement saying that "These figures tell a clear story. The video games industry is now an established part of the mainstream entertainment mix, Whilst the launch of Modern Warfare 2 has indeed been extraordinary, it is indicative of the growing popularity of video games."
