  • Windows 7 Emerges As A Big Sizzler, Says Analyst

06 November, 2009, by Desire Athow

Market research firm NPD Group is reporting that the US sales of Microsoft’s latest avatar in operating systems Windows 7 have blown past that of its predecessor Vista by a substantive margin.

Sales of Windows 7 within a week after its launch on 22 October have reportedly been around 234 percent higher than that of Vista sales during its first week of the launch, the research company reported on Thursday.

However, even with these astounding sales figures, revenues generated through Windows 7 sales have managed to supersede Windows Vista only by 83 percent. This disproportional revenue figure primarily owes to spate of price discounts, as well as lack of promotion associated with the latest version of Windows OS, NPD Group added.

Speaking about the remarkable sales figures, Stephen Baker, NPD’s VP of analysis, said: “Microsoft's program of early low-cost pre-sales, high visibility marketing, and aggressive deals helped make the Windows 7 software launch successful.”

“In a slow environment for packaged software Windows 7 brought a large number of customers into the software aisles”, he added.

Furthermore, Windows 7 launch has also significantly catalysed the sales of personal computers (PCs), which have almost doubled against the previous week, and around 49 percent higher than the same period a year back, NPD reported.
