  • Nokia Launches The N86, Its First 8MP Smartphone

17 February, 2009, by Desire Athow

Nokia has presented its most advanced cameraphone yet as the 8-megapixel snapper took centre stage in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress.

The device comes with a dual LED flash, Carl Zeiss Tessar optics, a 8-megapixel sensor and a 2.6-inch OLED QVGA (that's only 320x240 pixels) scratch-resistant non-touchscreen display

This is slightly disconcerting given that the competition has already released a number of smartphones with touchscreens larger than 3.5-inch.

Other features include onboard 8GB memory, Share on OVI integration, Nokia Maps, a 3.5mm headphone jack, assisted GPS and a microUSB port.

There's also a memory slot, an integrated stand and a TV out, all packed in a nice 149g metal chassis

The smartphone will run the Symbian S60 3rd edition v2 and is set to get launched in May 2009 with a suggested retail price of 375 Euros.

It appears therefore that the N86 will be a upper mid-range model that should be available on £30 per month contract.

Nokia Nseries director Juha-Pekka Sipponen commented on the release, stating that : "People demand mobile cameras that take excellent pictures in all light conditions. That’s why the aperture of the Nokia N86 8MP is comparable to that of a high quality, stand-alone digital camera.
