  • Dell Unveils Digital Download Store

18 February, 2009, by Desire Athow

Dell is partnering with digital content distribution company French company Nexway to release a download store called Dell Download Store which offers music, games and software, all available for download.

The US company chose a dotUK domain name to host the website but users worldwide can buy the games and the software; there are geographical restrictions on music though because of "publishing and licencing agreements with [Dell's] digital music partners."

The music files will be available from major labels and will include leading artists, all without digital right managements solutions as MP3 files.

The store currently sells the Brit Awards 2009 for £9.99; both Play.com and Amazon did not have the album available for digital download.

Single tracks are available for 79 pence but the user interface lacks the intuitiveness of other available solutions like 7digital.

Dell plans to extend its Download store beyond the initial territories of France, UK and Germany and will include movie downloads later.

Dell's partner, Nexway, has a number of high profile partnerships with Kaspersky, Nero, NOD32 and Lavasoft (yes, all of them security companies) to distribute their software.

The European Director of consumer marketing for Dell, David Clifton, declared that  "Consumers are very accustomed to downloading music and movies online but many are still buying shrink-wrapped software, We're now offering customers the choice to purchase the music and software they want, and download it direct to their PC from one convenient location"
